    Event Description:
History Speaks in Marathon: The Pomeranian German Immigration to Central Wisconsin

Why are there so many residents with Pomeranian heritage living in central Wisconsin?  DuWayne Zamzow will answer that question at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, at Marathon High School, 204 East St., Marathon. The Pomeranian German Immigration to Central Wisconsin is part of the History Speaks in Your Town series presented by the Marathon County Historical Society and the Continuing Education office of UW-Stevens Point at Wausau.

It was a long journey from Pomerania to Marathon County. This presentation will address the story of how groups of people were “pushed” from Pomerania, their journey across the Atlantic Ocean, their arrival in America, their “pull” to Wisconsin, and how they established a life in this area. There will be information about the Pommerscher Verein of Central Wisconsin and its goals to preserve this German heritage.

DuWayne Zamzow became interested in genealogy as a teen, and fulfilled his dream of finding his ancestral home in Pomerania after 14 years of research. He is a founding member of the Pommerscher Verein of Central Wisconsin. He directs the club’s Pommerscher Danz Gruppe (German Dance group), writes for its newspaper, and assists at its library.

This talk is free and open to the public. All donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.

The Historical Society is grateful to Janke Book Store and to Compass Properties for their sponsorship of the History Speaks series, and to the Murco Foundation and the Larry and Elsie Lohr Fund for their support for History Speaks In Your Town.
