The Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Hmong Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce, together are proud to present the Greater Wausau Young Professionals Conference. This full-day event is designed specifically for young professionals (ages 18 - 45) from throughout the region, to engage in fun and impactful dialogue regarding the livability of the Wausau Region.
How would you describe the vibrancy of the region? Is it a desirable place to live for people from all walks of life? Is it a welcoming and inclusive community? Attendees will have an opportunity to share their perspectives about what makes our community a great place for young professionals to live and grow their careers. In addition, attendees can share their ideas and visions for what it will take to ensure that future generations will be proud to call the Wausau Region their "home".

John Karras has devoted his career to the bold idea that every community has the potential to become a more vibrant place.
As VP of Strategic Accounts for Atlas Integrated, Karras channels his energies to empower economic development professionals and civic leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to make their communities more vibrant. Prior to joining Atlas, Karras spent a decade working as a national economic development strategist. Karras worked with thousands of community and business leaders who shared their insights and contributed to the strategic growth of big cities, suburbs, and rural communities.

How do you decide where to live? THE most important question companies and communities are asking about young professionals.
What are the factors that influence your decision of where to live? How can the Wausau region develop amenities that attract talent from outside the area, including big cities and rural communities? How are successful communities responding to change and preparing for the future?
These are some of the questions Karras will address, using examples of creative placemaking from communities in Wisconsin and vastly different places across the US ranging from NYC to Austin and Alaska to the Mississippi Delta. Karras will also highlight major trends such as the rise remote working and the resurgence of downtowns in large and small cities, and what they mean for Central Wisconsin.
Most importantly, Karras will interview young professionals about their choice to live in the Wausau region. This panel will include three different perspectives: a lifelong Central Wisconsinite, a "Boomerang" Wausau native that left and returned, and a newcomer that came to the Wausau region from outside the state.

The YP Forum will convene and engage young professionals in important discussion regarding a major theme of the Greater Wausau Region's Economic Development Strategic Plan ... Quality of Place. In planning for the future of the region, our community recognizes the importance of collecting the viewpoints of our next generations. Attendees will split into small groups to participate in rounds of conversation.

Dr. Pafoua (Pam) Her is currently a Business Partner with Leading Edge Payroll & HR Solutions and an Adjunct Professor at Rasmussen College in the School of Business. She has taught classes in the areas of Management, Sales and Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Ethics, Sales, and Professional Communication.
Dr. Her has served as an advisor to the Wisconsin 18 Clan Council and as a director for numerous boards such as United Hmong American Association, United Way Fox Cities, American Red Cross-Outagamie County, Fox Valley Literacy Council, Fox Cities Community Foundation, and CAP Services. She has also acted as an advisor to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court on cultural sensitivity and interpreters in judicial proceedings as well as NEW North, an economic development organization for Northeast Wisconsin, on recruiting and retaining diverse talent. Dr. Her has given over 200 presentations and workshops on intercultural communications in organizations, diversity & inclusion, microaggressions, leadership, maximizing a diverse workforce, Hmong culture & history, Hmong mental health and interpreting issues, Hmong and the legal system, and integrating Hmong employees into the workplace.

"The Impact of Unconscious Bias and Microaggressions on Diverse Professionals in the Workplace"
As businesses strive to compete in a growing global market and economy, one of its most pivotal assets for success is human capital. Thus, it is critical that organizations create inclusive cultures that ensure safety, encourages authenticity, and maximizes the abilities and competencies of all employees. To do this, organizations must understand the dynamics of their culture, specifically subtle unintentional comments and actions, such as microaggressions, that psychologically hinder the performance and motivations of diverse employees. The ability to effectively harness skills and talents in an increasingly diverse workforce is crucial in ensuring innovation and creating a competitive advantage.
This session will discuss microaggressions and recent research on the impact of microaggressions in the workplace and provide practical implications of unconscious bias and microaggressions in the workplace through a panel discussion with diverse young professionals from the Wausau area.
