ATHENA Award Program

The prestigious ATHENA Award and the ATHENA Young Professional Award pay tribute to those in the region who make a difference in the advancement of women in leadership and professional roles. Each year the announcement of the ATHENA recipients in announced during a program in November. Coverage leading up to the day of the awards announcement adds to the excitement surrounding the award.


2012 ATHENA Award Recipients

Jeny Nieuwenhuis (pictured right), President of REI Engineering Inc, was named the 2012 ATHENA Award recipient.  Nieuwenhuis is the 27th recipient of the award given by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. In accepting the award, Nieuwenhuis attributed her success to her parents who took a big risk to start a business with nothing and to all of those who in her life who are incredibly supportive.

The ATHENA Award is presented to a woman or man, who is honored for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.

A second award, the ATHENA Young Professionals Award was given to Megan Lawrence (pictured right), General Manager of Wausau Center Mall. Megan attributed her success to her parents who instilled the importance and value of giving back to the community in which you live.

The ATHENA Young Professional award is presented to an emerging leader, who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in her or his business or profession, provides valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in their community.
