2009 ATHENA Award Recipient
Josie Paleologue-Pierce, posthumously, former Program Director, AmeriCorps Team, Greater Wausau Area

“Josie Paleologue-Pierce demonstrated professional excellence, community development and a desire to help women in the community for over 20 years.    Josie was involved in working with women at The Women’s Community when it first started in 1980.  She played a key role in helping women find jobs in the community as well as to assist them to complete their education so that they could support themselves.  In 1998, she became the director of the Greater Wausau AmeriCorps program where she was involved in placing AmeriCorps members at various sites in the community to provide direct services to youth and adults.  Over the years she impacted the lives of over 300 AmeriCorps members and thousands of youth and adults that benefitted from the AmeriCorps service.  Josie was an active community member and served on various boards and committees.

“Thinking about Josie brings to mind words and phrases such as a sense of style, dignity, elegance, serenity, caring, compassion, love of beauty, love of the arts, and love of home and family.  Josie had a great sense of style – in how she dressed and how she interacted with the world. She conveyed a sense of calmness to those around her.

“Josie was a person of great compassion.  She had a strong commitment to social justice and world peace issues.  Injustice upset Josie – acts directed against individuals, the oppression of groups, and the violence of war.  Josie participated in peace demonstrations.  She stood for racial justice, for the equality of women, and for an end to classism.  She was involved in planning the local Dr. Martin Luther King Day memorial activities.

“Josie held passionate convictions.  Yet she always carried out those convictions with
quiet dignity.”

Prepared and submitted by Steve Froedl, Program Director, AmeriCorps Team – Greater Wausau Area.
