Wausau has a long history as a leader and innovator in the insurance industry. However, there may a bit more to the “Wausau Story” than what you know.
In the 1875 and 1876, in the townships of Berlin and Stettin (which at the time included much of the city of Wausau), two of Wisconsin’s first insurance companies were created. Berlin Farmers Mutual and Stettin Mutual Fire were organized for the sole purpose of helping their neighbors in hard times. The goal for these pioneers wasn’t so much success, as it was survival.
In 1998 these two small, but historic companies joined forces and today are known as Mutual of Wausau. Our founding principle of “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” has been with us from the start, and it has not changed in the past 137 years. We are still locally operated, and our policyholders are the owners of the company. We may be quiet, but we are certainly a survivor.
In a world where we are bombarded by offers of 15 minute quotes and big corporate insurance, we are happy providing a strong, local, caring option for your insurance needs. Our policyholders are our owners, and our employees are our neighbors. This focus on the local community is beneficial not only to the spirit of the Wausau community, but also to our local economy. The premiums paid to our company stay in the community.
Today, Mutual of Wausau is healthy and growing. In 2007, using local contractors and suppliers, we built a new headquarters on Stewart Avenue. We provide Home, Farm, and Commercial insurance protection to over 17,000 local members. We employ 25 employees in our Wausau and Reedsville offices. Our plan is to continue to expand and provide Auto coverage in 2013. This will provide more jobs for the community, while providing more options for our customers. We believe in buying local. We use a local bank, investment advisor, accountant, marketing firm, and others. We are proud to combine our “old world” personal care with “new world” technology and modern insurance coverages that our clients need.
The Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce has worked hard for the past 100 years, helping the local community grow and prosper. We are grateful for that. Without the prosperity in the community, our company would not have achieved the success that we have for the past 137 years. In turn, our success helps the community because we are here to help you in your time of need.
A member since 1945, we are one of the oldest members of the Wausau Chamber of Commerce. We work well together because our missions are closely paralleled. Both organizations were created around the turn of the century for the sole purpose of helping the local community; working with the Wausau Chamber of Commerce is a natural fit.
