Wausau East a Finalist in Farmers Insurance $100,000 Dream Big Teacher Challenge
Public voting begins October 1 throughout the month of October to determine winners
Wausau East High School’s proposal “Plugged In, Engaged, and Informed: Ownership of Learning through Video Production and Journalism” is one of 15 finalists nationwide, and the only finalist in the state of Wisconsin, for the Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers Dream Big Teacher Challenge. Six of the 15 finalists will win $100,000. Public voting throughout the month of October will determine the winners, which will be announced in early December.
East Librarian Paula Hase and teachers Elizabeth Kysely, Graphics Department; Kris Mela, WETV News; and Kurt Hornby, WETV Sports, collaborated on the proposal that seeks to upgrade the school’s abandoned analog broadcasting studio with a state-of-the-art 21st Century digital broadcasting space for students to create live and prerecorded multimedia broadcasting shows and educational videos supporting school behavior goals and interventions. Community members can also learn basic editing skills and technology using the new equipment. The proposal recognizes that the explosion of digital technology puts the power of immediate information in students’ hands. Understanding the ethical and legal responsibilities of communicating in a digital world and the importance of accuracy and discernment are critical life-long skills.
Wausau East High School needs the public’s help to move from finalist to winner by visiting ThankAmericasTeachers.com and voting for East High’s proposal summary video once a day, each day, during the month of October. Those with more than one email address are encouraged to vote daily with each account. Principal Dr. Brad Peck said, “Being awarded this Farmers Insurance grant would provide
our students, their families, and members of the Wausau community an amazing learning experience in photo and video journalism!”
